Established in 1790, First United Methodist Church in Portsmouth has sought to be a place in the Seacoast area, where people can find support and encouragement as they grow in their faith.
The church has seen many changes over the years. We have met in various places, expanding to meet the changing needs of the time. This present sanctuary was built in 1913 with the Education and fellowship wing added in 1958. The first society was organized on April 27, 1808 and this marked the recognized begninning of the church.

The Rev. George Pickering was the minister at the time of organization in 1808 with the membership of the church numbering 52. Meetings were held in the Hutching house on Washington Street until the Church on Vaughn Street was purchased. The society remained in this building until the new church on State Street (now a Hebrew Synagogue) was occupied on January 1, 1828. The New Hampshire Annual Conference was formed in the State Street building in June of 1829. The 125th Anniversary sessions of the Conference were held in our present church in May of 1954. The cornerstone of our present church was laid September 8,1912 and the building was dedicated April 27, 1913, just 105 years after the Society was first organized.
The changes of location and name over the years has not changed the purpose for which our fore-fathers first incorporated the church; namely service to God and to mankind thru the avenue of His Church in our community. |
